Beyond the Self and the Other: Appropriating and Resignifying Practices in Marimba Music in Chiapas

Abstract

Marimbists in Chiapas have developed a dynamic conception of their auditory identity, turning the adaptation and resignificance of music with heterogeneous origins into common practice of this musical tradition. This article seeks, through a journey through the history of the marimba world in Chiapas, to make visible the processes that made possible the negotiation of a praxis of appropriation and resignificance of music and forms of execution during the development of the marimba in Chiapas, and which would allow the appropriation of the other to become the basis of one’s own auditory knowledge.

Juan Bermúdez, University of Vienna

Juan Bermúdez, es un etnomusicólogo mexicano radicado en Austria. Realizó estudios superiores de música (marimba) en la Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas (México), así como de etnomusicología en la Universidad de Música y Arte Dramático de Graz (Austria), donde también participó en varios proyectos de investigación. Ha sido autor y coordinador de varios libros, entre ellos Voces de la Sierra: Marimbas Sencillas en Chiapas (2014) y Echoes of the Past: The Marimba Sencilla in Chiapas (2021). Bermúdez obtuvo su doctorado en etnomusicología por la Universidad de Viena con una etnografía de las prácticas musicales en la aplicación TikTok. Su trabajo actual se centra en prácticas de música y danza en medios digitales y contextos multimedia.
