Abstract

It was in the years following the end of the Second World War that the French composer Pierre Boulez—by his own account—encountered the poetry of René Char, the poet who, around 1929, had joined the Surrealist group led by André Breton. This encounter proved decisive for Boulez, as he immediately admired the qualities of conciseness, elaboration, and power present in Char’s verses.
