Sound puzzles and timbre constructions: towards a categorization of the analysis parameters of a phonographic production

Abstract

Phonographic production is represented as a mode of creative expression that is not limited to the simple capture of sound, but transforms it based on a set of decisions that are debated between artistic intuition and technological mediation. The study of the sound parameters of a phonographic production entails an in-depth analysis of the textures that are formed within the multitrack project of a tape recorder or DAW software. The tactility of the sound, in the words of Allan F. Moore (2012), in a recording depends on multiple factors that combine musical and technical parameters, personalized in the action of the music producer. The article reviews the main approaches that have been made to the study of musical production from musicology, proposing a categorization of the different analysis parameters and the difficulties involved in facing this object of study.

Author Biography

  • Marco Antonio Juan de Dios Cuartas, Departamento de Musicología de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España.

    Doctor en Musicología e Ingeniero de Audio. Licenciado en Historia y Ciencias de la Música por la Universidad de Oviedo amplía posteriormente sus estudios graduándose con “first class honours” en “Recording Arts” en Middlesex University London. Su tesis doctoral titulada La figura del productor musical en España: propuestas metodológicas para un análisis musicológico representa una investigación pionera en el análisis de la producción musical dentro de la musicología española. Es miembro de la ASARP (Association for the Study of the Art of Record Production), la SEdeM (Sociedad Española de Musicología), donde forma parte de la comisión de grabaciones, y de la SIBE-Sociedad de Etnomusicología, donde coordina el grupo de trabajo en producción musical. Ha escrito numerosos artículos científicos relacionados con la influencia de la tecnología en los procesos creativos y la evolución del diseño sonoro dentro de la producción musical y cinematográfica. Ha coeditado diferentes libros como Los nuevos métodos de producción y difusión musical de la era post-digital (2018). En 2018 obtuvo una subvención de la Fundación Latin Grammy a través de su Research and Preservation Grant Program para el desarrollo del proyecto de investigación “Las músicas populares en el contexto del estudio de grabación: espacios y agentes en los procesos de producción discográfica en España (1960-1990)”. En la actualidad es profesor del Departamento de Musicología de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid donde coordina el laboratorio sonoro Sonolab UCM. Desde febrero de 2020 es secretario de la sección española de la AES (Audio Engineering Society).
