La arenosa: genres and (dis)arrangements
Keywords:
popular music, genre, genre analysis, arrangementAbstract
Some arrangements seem to challenge the limits of the musical genre in which they are inscribed. In this article I try to analyze the tension between these arrangements and their genres in two cases: The well-known cueca La arenosa (both Dúo Salteño’s classic version and the edited score).Through musical analysis I try to reveal their formal and technical characteristics. The work suggests that the minimal condition for cueca genre stability (even in problematic arrangements) is the permanence of certain structural characteristics which are analytically describable.
