Abstract

The history of the new tango-canción has been approached through strongly masculinized repertoires and narratives, which leave a part of the story in the shadows. In the current academic and musical field, it is notorious, on the one hand, the lack of specialized bibliography about women tango composers, and on the other, the ignorance and lack of circulation of musical repertoire written by women. With the growing demands of gender in music, which highlight the need to modify the way we tell the history of our popular music, this article provides a brief overview of the songs composed by women in the moment of emergence of the new tango. We seek to counteract to some extent the insufficient visibility that female tango musicians in general, and female composers in particular, have had throughout the history of tango.
